RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University returned to the win column on Thursday night with arguably their best performance of the season in a 90-79 victory over the University of Texas at Arlington. The Lady Mavs entered the Fowler Event Center with a 9-1 record in Western Athletic Conference play and a six-game win streak. They left having allowed the highest field goal and three-point percentages to any opponent all season. CBU improves to 6-0 all-time against UTA, is now 6-4 in WAC play, and just posted their highest single-game scoring total of the season.
A quartet of Lancers scored in double-figures, led by Klhoe Lemon, who poured in a game-high 25 points. Lemon was as locked in as ever as she shot 70.0% (7-10) from the field and 71.4% (5-7) from long distance. Grace Schmidt handled herself well against one of the bigger backcourts in the conference, scoring 19 points and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Nhug Bosch Duran and Shawnee Nordstrom added 15 and 11 points, respectively. Anaiyah Tu'ua had a massive game running the show, dishing out a career-high 13 assists, the most in a single game by a Lancer since Ane Olaeta also tallied a baker's dozen against Lamar in March 2022.
The Lady Mavs would hold a slight lead for most of the first quarter, closing the opening frame with a two-point advantage. In the second quarter, the Lancers answered with authority, outscoring UTA 26-17 to build a 46-39 lead at halftime. Arlington opened the second half with an 8-3 run and eventually tied the game back up with a little under three minutes to go in the third. That, however, didn't last long as CBU went on a 12-1 run in the final two-plus minutes and led by nine heading into the final frame. Emma Johnassonm, Tu'ua, and Lemon combined for a 7-1 opening 90 seconds, pushing the Lancer lead into double-digits, which they would never relinquish.
The Lancers are back on the road for their second game of the week, heading to Utah Tech for Saturday's contest. The Lancers and Trailblazers have been battling for nearly two decades, but CBU has an immense advantage in the rivalry, owning an 18-4 record all-time against UTU. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Pacific time.
