RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball program fell to Loyola Marymount University 5-3 on Tuesday evening in a midweek tilt after a late Lancer comeback fell short. CBU drops to 4-9 on the season, while LMU moves to 8-5.
The Lions got things going early against the Lancers and put a run on the board in the first inning after CBU walked in its first run of the night. LMU would add another run to its lead with a solo home run from Beau Ankeney before the CBU bullpen would stave off the Lion's offense and post five scoreless innings. After Carter Eberhard scored on a throwing error from the visitor's catcher, Bubba Rocha tied the game with an RBI single that scored Kenny Winters to tie the game.
The Lancer's comeback came to a halt after Nicholas Dumesnil grounded into a double play to end the bottom of the eighth inning. CBU's pitching would struggle in the top of the ninth after loading the bases via two hit-by-pitches and a single. LMU ultimately went on to put up a three-spot after CBU walked in two runs, and the Lions scored on a passed ball. Connor Ross would try to get things going again in the bottom of the ninth for CBU after nailing his second home run as a solo shot, but the Lancers fell short in the end.
California Baptist's pitching staff totaled 11 strikeouts on the evening, with Julian Orozco leading the group with four. CBU struggled in the free pass domain, where the squad gave up 11 walks and three hits by pitches. The Lancers gave up three runs via walks on loaded bases and one run on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
CBU is back in action this weekend as they welcome the Air Force to Totman Stadium for a three-game spread, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
