RIVERSIDE--- Cody New shined yet again for the California Baptist baseball program on Friday night after leading the Lancers to a 10-3 win over Air Force. CBU's hot bats produced runs early and were aided by another phenomenal outing from the Lancer pitching staff to improve to 5-9 on the season.
New picked up right where he left off and struck out a pair of batters in the first inning of the night. The sophomore lefty would go on to sit down at least one batter in all six innings he pitched, accumulating 11 punchouts on the evening. New allowed just four hits and no earned runs, dropping his ERA to 1.33 with 30 strikeouts on the season thus far.
On the other side of the mound, it was Andrew Walters who put CBU on the board with an RBI single before Connor Ross earned his first RBI of the night off a sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Kim. The first inning was ultimately capped off by Ben Castelli's third double of the season, which cleared the bases for a pair of runs. The Falcons put themselves on the board in the top of the third behind a throwing error that allowed the runner to take second before coming home on two outs. CBU responded well with a lone run in the bottom of the third to keep its distance with the lead.
Ross would come up big in the bottom of the fifth inning again for CBU after he laced a bomb to left-center field with a runner on to push the Lancer's lead 7-1. Trevor Spainhoward knocked in the last run of the inning with an RBI double for his first in California Baptist uniform. Air Force managed to stick another two runs on the board in the eighth, but a throwing error from the Falcons in the bottom of the inning that allowed CBU to score shut the door on any brewing comeback the visitors might have had.
Four Lancers checked in with a pair of hits on Friday night against AF, while Ross led the squad with four RBI on the evening. CBU's pitching staff retired 15 batters, nearly matching the single-game record they set last weekend against Utah with 18 strikeouts.
The Lancers will return to Totman Stadium tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. game against the Falcons for the second installment of the weekend series.
