COLLEGE STATION, TX--- Pedro Marin and Daniel Abdala kicked off the NCAA West Regionals for the California Baptist University track team on Wednesday evening as they competed in the Men's 10K.
The two CBU runners would fall short of qualifying placement for Nationals but would both submit solid performances in the humid, warm conditions of E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station, Texas. The field was as loaded as it has been in recent memory, with dozens of returning All-Americans competing and several rising star freshmen taking the track. The race was one of the fastest, considering the poor conditions, with the top 15 placers all besting the facility record of 28:55.56, which was set in 2021. The New Mexico standouts of Ishmael Kipkurui and Habtom Samuel would finish 1-2 as they have been doing all season and would be joined by Ernest Cheruiyot of Texas Tech on the podium.
For the Lancers, Marin would be the first across the line doing so in 21st place with a time of 29:04.02. The time was the second fastest of Marin's career and improved 17th spots from where he was ranked heading into the week. Marin finishes his outdoor season with his first regional qualifier, a silver medal finish in the 1500M at the conference championships, and top-5 program record times in the 1500M, 5K, and 10K. Behind Marin would be Abdala, who would finish in 42nd place with a time of 29:58.43. Abdala's season is not over yet, as he will compete alongside Valentin Soca in the Men's 5K on Friday evening.
NEXT: The Lancers will be back in action on Friday, May 30, at the West Regionals as they compete in the Men's Steeplechase and 5K.
