COLLEGE STATION, TX--- The California Baptist University track squad concluded the West Regional Prelims on Saturday evening as Ava Dyck finished her phenomenal freshman campaign in the Women's 5K.
Dyck would compete in the second heat of the two-heat race, needing to finish in the top five or run a time under 16:03.71 to earn a national qualifier. The freshman would hang in the lead pack for the opening eight minutes of the race, but a push from the lead pack led to some separation, and Dyck would fall into the trailer group. Dyck would close the race admirably with a time of 16:32.44, placing her 17th in her heat and 30th overall. Her finish would improve her pre-race seeding by 12 spots after entering the race with the 44th fastest time in the region.
Ava finishes her incredible freshman campaign with a 5K individual title at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, an All-Region finish at the XC Regionals, the WAC XC Freshman of the Year Title, and a First-Team All-WAC finish in cross-country season. She will also finish the year with two of the top six 5K times in program history, including a personal best time of 16:01.51 that she set at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
NEXT: The Lancers will continue on to the National Championships in Eugene, Oregon, as Valentin Soca will compete in the Men's 5K on Friday, June 13.
