RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team concluded its home tournament on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of New Mexico in four sets to finish The Joust 2-1.
The Lancers placed second in the tournament behind only Portland State, who went unbeaten at 3-0. The victory over the Lobos moved CBU to 4-5 in non-conference play while the Lobos suffered their second defeat of the season and dropped to 7-2.
The Lancers once again got off to a hot start courtesy of Mia Rossman, who recorded aces on three straight sets to give the Lancers an early 6-1 lead. The Lobos recovered and tied the set on three different occasions, eventually taking their first and only lead of the set at 18-17. From that point, the Lancers scored six of the next seven points, and kills by Eleftheria Baxa and Eliana Posada would finish off New Mexico 25-22.
CBU got off to a similarly fast start in the second set due to a solid service run from setter Maddie Brown. UNM would once again recover in short order, but the Lancers would put together a 4-0 run to recapture the momentum that they would not relinquish. The Lancers would grab the 2-0 lead following a 25-20 set two result.
Facing defeat, the New Mexico Lobos responded in the third set, leading by as many as ten points in the set and eventually settling for a 25-18 victory to force a decisive fourth set at Van Dyne Gym. The Lancers would bring the heat in the fourth set as Rossman would once again get the home team off to a terrific start with back-to-back aces. New Mexico never really got close in the frame as CBU's offense was efficient, and their defense made several phenomenal plays. The Lancers' lead got to as many as ten points and eventually settled on a 25-16 victory to claim the match in four sets.
Posada, in her first start of the season, was impactful, recording 18 kills on a .382 hitting percentage. The 18 kills are a new career-high for Posada, and she would add five digs. Emery DeJong would record another double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs, and also have a season high of three blocks to make her presence felt on the defensive side. Rossman was a crucial piece in the Lancer service game, leading the team with five aces. Brown continued her terrific play with 43 more assists and 11 digs to tally another double-double.
Posada and Brown were both named to The Joust All-Tournament Team following their efforts. Brown posted 131 assists over 12 sets in the tournament, had 37 digs, and posted double-doubles in all three matches for the Lancers. Posada, in just seven sets, had 29 kills on a .440 hitting percentage and would also chip in 12 digs and three aces.
