RIVERSIDE --- Graduate guard Dominique Daniels Jr. has added two more awards to his trophy case, as Monday revealed the CBU guard was both the WAC and Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week. The honors come after Daniels Jr. posted a CBU record 47 points in Saturday's overtime win against Utah Valley.
Daniels Jr. is the first CBU player to win the Lou Henson National Player of the Week award since Milan Acquaah in 2018. The WAC honors are the seventh of Daniels Jr.'s CBU career.
The Lancers went 2-0 last week, posting victories against Utah Tech and Utah Valley to push their win streak to five. CBU is 5-3 in conference action, placing them in a tie for second place behind UT Arlington who is 5-2.
In those two games, Daniels Jr. averaged 36.5 PPG, improving his season average to 22.0, the tenth best scoring average in the nation. He also averaged 5.5 RPG and 3.0 APG.
The week began with Daniels Jr. finishing with 26 points, five rebounds, and five assists in a 73-64 win against Utah Tech. Daniels Jr. connected on 9-of-20 from the field and sank 7-of-10 from the free throw line.
Three days later, he upped his game in front of nearly 4,000 fans, as CBU came back to beat Utah Valley in overtime.
Saturday's victory saw Daniels Jr. score 37 of his 47 points in the second half and overtime as he finished the night 13-of-21 from the field and 18-of-21 at the charity stripe. The 47-point performance was the best scoring outburst in CBU history, surpassing the previous mark of 46 that had been hit in 1970 and 1971. Daniels Jr. also set a new record of 21 free throw attempts and matched the program record of 18 made free throws.
"I was just determined to win my matchup by any means necessary," said Daniels Jr. after the win on Saturday. "I wanted to do whatever it took to help my team get a (win) and get over the hump, and that's what I did. I'm just happy that we got the (win) at the end of the day. I don't even care about the points, it's cool, but at the end of the day it's a team sport. I love my guys, and we're going to keep doing whatever it takes to get better."
The graduate guard will be eyeing another milestone in the coming weeks, as he sits less than 150 points away from 3,000 for his collegiate career (junior college and DI).
CBU is 10-0 at home this season, extending the program's streak of double-digit home win seasons to seven. The Lancers will be on the road this weekend to play UT Arlington but will return to Riverside for back-to-back home games next week on February 5 and 7.
