RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team dropped its home conference opener on Thursday night as the visiting Tritons bested them in four sets in the Fowler Events Center.
The Lancers are still in search of their first win in conference play at 0-3, while the Tritons move to 2-1 in Big West action.
The first set was one to forget for the Lancers as the Tritons came out firing and scored the first eight points of the set. The Lancers never got closer than that as UCSD would wind up with a lopsided 25-8 opening set victory. The Lancers cleaned up the mistakes in set two as they would start the period off on a 7-3 run. The Tritons closed the gap quickly thereafter and would eventually tie the match at 13. UCSD would take the lead with a 4-0 run and never relinquish it, winning the second set 25-22 for a commanding 2-0 advantage.
CBU would come out determined in the third set, racking up a quick 8-3 advantage to force an early UCSD timeout. The Tritons chipped away at the lead slowly but surely and would tie the match at 19 all to force Trevor Johnson into a huddle. A critical 3-0 run from the Lancers, followed by a successful Trevor Johnson challenge, would swing the momentum back in CBU's favor and force the set into extra points. CBU would have set point twice in extras and would finally cash in on a UCSD attack error to win the set 27-25 and force a fourth set.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle that ended in a 14-14 tie ahead of the media timeout. UCSD would take a three-point lead late in the set and would be unable to recover, falling 25-21 and the four-set match to the Tritons.
Audrey Heiring was phenomenal on the outside as she would lead the way with 13 kills on a .364 hitting percentage. Eleftheria Baxa was close behind her with 12 kills and two blocks. Maddie Brown came off the bench to lead the Lancers in assists with 20 and added seven digs. Avery Barber would have a near double-double with 18 assists and nine digs.
"It was a great atmosphere tonight in the Events Center. Our fans were amazing, and it was a fun match to be a part of. Really proud of our fight and grit tonight," said Coach Johnson after the match.
NEXT: The Lancers will remain at home as they welcome UC Irvine on Saturday at 6 PM in Van Dyne Gym.
