SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball team nearly pulled off the upset of the conference schedule as they pushed Cal Poly to five sets in San Luis Obispo on Friday night.
CBU became the first Big West team this season to take multiple sets off the Mustangs, as the Mustangs ultimately succumbed to the team that reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The loss drops CBU to 0-7 in Big West action while improving Cal Poly to 7-0.
The Lancers got off to a quick start against the Mustangs, leading 11-4 out of the gates and forcing a Cal Poly timeout. CBU played nearly error-free volleyball throughout the opening set, while the Mustangs struggled on the service line. CBU committed just four total errors in the opening set compared to a dozen for Cal Poly, as they would build a lead as many as 12 points. CBU would win the frame 25-15, handing Cal Poly just its second set loss in conference play, and it was tied for the biggest set loss the Mustangs had suffered all season.
Errors crept up on the Lancers in the second set as they would fall behind early and be unable to recover. Cal Poly led by as many as 11 at 21-10 before the Lancers scored four straight to keep the set interesting. The Mustangs would halt the comeback attempt and score four of the final five points to win the frame 25-15 and tie up the match.
The third set was the most competitive of the match, as the Mustangs maintained a small lead for most of the frame. Cal Poly would get to set points at 24-22, but the Lancers would not allow the Mustangs to win, as they would get a kill from Emery Dejong and take advantage of a Cal Poly error to force extra points. In extras, Cal Poly committed two costly attack errors as the Lancers closed the frame on a 4-0 run to claim the 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set would go in favor of Cal Poly as they would win the frame 25-19 and force a decisive fifth set. CBU would take the first lead of the set as they jumped out to a 4-2 start. Cal Poly would take the lead for the first time in the frame at 8-7 to cause Trevor Johnson to burn his first timeout. The Mustangs would go on a 7-1 run following that to deplete all of CBU's timeouts and give Cal Poly the 14-8 lead. CBU would continue to fight, scoring on back-to-back possessions to bring the deficit to 14-10. The Mustangs would finally end the match with a kill as they escaped with a five-set victory to remain unbeaten in conference action.
Emery DeJong led the way offensively with a solid double-double of 17 kills and ten digs. Eleftheria Baxa was not far behind with 12 kills and three blocks while hitting an efficient .375 from the floor. Maddie Brown would submit a double-double performance at setter with 35 assists and 15 digs as she led the Lancers in both categories.
NEXT: The Lancers will finish their Central Coast trip tomorrow evening in Santa Barbara as they take on the UCSB Gauchos at 6 PM.
