SAN DIEGO, CA --- For the first time in program history, California Baptist's name was called on Selection Sunday, as the Lancers learned their next opponent for the Round of 64. CBU, a No. 13 seed in the East Region, will battle the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday in San Diego.
The Lancers punched their ticket to the national tournament as the automatic qualifier from the WAC following Saturday night's victory against Utah Valley. CBU trailed by seven with just over two minutes remaining, but three consecutive 3-pointers from Dominique Daniels Jr. capped off a miraculous comeback in the Orleans Arena.
CBU enters the national tournament 25-8 and are winners of their last six games.
The Lancers' first opponent is a household name in college basketball: the Kansas Jayhawks. The Jayhawks earned an at-large bid and the No. 4 seed in the East Region. While CBU is making its first appearance in March Madness, the Jayhawks heard their name called for the 53rd time in program history.
Head coach Bill Self has been leading the Jayhawks since 2003 and has won two national championships during his time in Lawrence.
The Jayhawks enter the Big Dance 23-10 and were eliminated in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament, losing 69-47 to Houston. Darryn Peterson leads KU with 19.8 PPG in 22 games this season. Kansas features four players scoring double digits. The Jayhawks average 75.6 PPG and allow 69.4 PPG.
Friday will be the first-ever meeting between the Lancers and Jayhawks on a basketball court. It will, however, be the second meeting between the two schools in an NCAA Tournament this academic year. CBU Women's Soccer traveled to Lawrence for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last fall.
The Lancers and Jayhawks have two common opponents on their 2025-26 schedule: BYU and Colorado. Kansas went 2-0 against BYU and Colorado, both Big 12 matchups. CBU played BYU and Colorado in consecutive games in early December.
Friday's winner will advance to the Round of 32 on Sunday and face either St. John's or Northern Iowa. The East Regional, featuring the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight, will be in Washington, D.C.
This weekend's NCAA Tournament games in San Diego will be held at the Viejas Arena on the campus of San Diego State University. Ticketing information will be released as it becomes available.
Friday's game has been scheduled for 6:45 p.m. and will be televised nationally on CBS. Kevin Harlan, Robbie Hummel, and Stan Van Gundy will be on the call. Westwood One will have the radio broadcast with Craig Silver and Andy Freeman.
