LOS ANGELES, CA--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team finalized its season on Saturday evening as it battled the top-seeded UCLA Bruins in the NCAA Round of 64 at Pauley Pavilion to a 96-43 result.
CBU's season ends at 23-11 after capturing both the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles en route to its second March Madness berth in program history.
The Lancers drew first blood on the Bruins as Emma Johansson would soar to the basket for the quick bucket. CBU stayed one step ahead of the top-seeded Bruins for the majority of the first half behind some critical made triples from Filipa Barros and Shawnee Nordstrom. Following Nordstrom's second triple of the first period, the Bruins would execute a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead and give themselves a little cushion.
The insertion of Chance Bucher in the second period was a huge lift for Jarrod Olson's staff, as the graduate guard would score eight straight points for the Lancers to begin the second period. UCLA continued to score at a high percentage to end the half, but the Lancers kept it close, trailing 44-34 at the break. CBU outscored the Bruins by double-digits from the perimeter in the first half and would keep their turnovers to a minimum to the stingy Bruin defense.
The second half would be all Bruins as the #1 seed would emerge from the locker room with renewed energy and would quickly score 11 straight points to force a Coach Olson timeout. The Lancers would break up the scoring run with a quick shot from Sofia Alonso, but UCLA would finish the frame on a 20-2 run to bring the lead to 37 after three quarters. The Bruins would continue their dominance in the fourth period as they would finalize the 96-43 victory inside Pauley Pavilion.
Bucher would lead the Lancers with 11 points in her final collegiate contest, scoring all of her points off the bench. Filipa Barros finalized her incredible season with seven points and five rebounds, while Grace Schmidt ended her legendary Lancer career with a team-high seven rebounds.
CBU finishes its season with another amazing footnote in its storied program's history. The Lancers won 20+ games for the fourth time in the DI era under Jarrod Olson and won the WAC Tournament for the third and final time in its last season in the conference.
