CBU Drops Saturday Afternoon Contest to Idaho

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team wrapped up its home tournament on Saturday afternoon as it battled Idaho to a five-set defeat in Van Dyne Gym. The Lancers drop to 2-6 while the Vandal improve to 6-3.
The Lancers would win the opening set behind an incredible opening performance from Eleftheria Baxa. Baxa would register seven kills in the opening frame on ten attacks to lead the Lancers to the 25-22 victory and a 1-0 set lead. The Vandals would come back at the Lancers in the second set as they would score the first five points unanswered. CBU would respond with a sizable scoring run that would tie the match at 10 apiece. A 7-2 Idaho run would steal back the momentum for the Vandals, leading to a 25-21 set victory to tie the match up at one apiece.
The Vandals followed up their set two victory with another solid frame in the third set, leading by as many as six points, and would take the lead in the match 2-1 with the 25-21 win. Facing elimination, the Lancers would have their best set of the match in the fourth frame as they would lead by four for the majority of the back half of the set. The Lancers would finish off the Vandals with a 5-1 scoring run, concluding in an Emery DeJong service ace to force a fifth set.
Idaho got off to a fast start in the fifth set with the early 7-3 lead that would force CBU to huddle up. The Lancers cut the lead in half a few points later, but the Vandals would continue to answer back and would eventually finalize the 15-9 win and take the match in five sets.
Baxa would lead the scoring with 13 kills on a .182 hitting percentage and would add two blocks. Freshman Anaiya Campbell did a little bit of everything for the Lancers with eight kills, three aces, and five digs. The blocking was once again phenomenal for the Lancers, with 13 as a team, led by Audrey Heiring, who posted four total. Baxa and Bella Breuer would be named to the All-Tournament Team for their terrific performances over the three-game weekend.
NEXT: The Lancers will embark on their final non-conference trip as they head to San Francisco to compete in the USF Invitational.
