Lancers Top Seattle in Four Sets

CORVALLIS, OR --- California Baptist's experience in Oregon State's ASICS Invitational continued on Friday with the Lancers battling the Redhawks of Seattle University. After splitting the first two sets of the day, the Lancers claimed victories in the third and fourth, powering CBU to their second win of the season.
The Lancers sit 2-2 through four matches this season. One more contest in the ASICS Invitational remains when CBU takes on Montana on Saturday.
Freshman Nalanie Neal led the attack on Friday with 15 kills on a .297 hitting performance. Neal, who added eight digs, registered double-digit kills for the second time this season, as she finished with the best hitting percentage of her young collegiate career.
Audrey Heiring was next on the stat sheet with a double-double performance, registering 14 kills on the offensive end and contributing defensively with 11 digs. Avery Barber led the Lancers with 13 digs, as CBU finished with 67 digs to 43 out of the Redhawks.
Bella Breuer also contributed to the attack with an 11-kill showing.
Friday's contest opened with a back-and-forth affair, with both sides trading point for point, leading into the first technical timeout of the afternoon. Two points proved to be the largest lead for either side until a 4-0 run for CBU gave the Lancers a 23-20 cushion late in the opening set. The Lancers eventually pushed to set point, which Seattle fought off twice before the Lancers claimed a 25-23 opening set victory.
Seattle countered CBU's early win with a 25-22 victory in the second.
The Lancers' best set of the day came in the third when CBU hit .400 as a team, registering only four errors in a 25-16 win. The set was deadlocked at nine before a 7-2 CBU run gave the Lancers a five-point cushion. The Lancers later added a set closing 6-1 run to place them one set away from victory.
CBU had another run in them in the fourth, a 7-1 scoring run that pulled the Lancers out of a 12-7 hole, placing CBU with a one-point advantage. Seattle gained some ground late, scoring four straight to take a 20-16 lead, but the Lancers countered by scoring nine of the final ten points to earn the victory.
The Lancers will close out the ASICS Invitational against Montana on Saturday, with the first serve coming at 11 a.m. The Lancers will then return to Riverside to begin preparation for their first round of home matches as The Joust returns to Van Dyne Gym September 10-12.
