ANTEATERS UPEND LANCERS IN FIVE
IRVINE, Calif. --- Shamsu Awudu had 21 kills and 7 blocks, but it wasn’t enough as NCAA Division I UC Irvine defeated 2-time defending NAIA champion California Baptist, 30-28, 23-30, 27-30, 30-24, 15-12, in both team’s season-openers Tuesday night in Irvine.
The loss drops the Lancers to 0-1 on the season.
Jayson Jablonsky and Matt Webber each tallied 22 kills apiece for the Anteaters.
As a team, the Lancers tallied 17 blocks. Urs Gunthor, and Romain Vetter also contributed 7 blocks each. The Lancers hit .283 (69-28-145) as a team.
Corey Spence added 17 kills and 3 blocks. Seidu Ajanako finished with 15 kills, 8 digs and 5 blocks. Vetter had 8 kills to go with his 7 blocks, and Gunthor added 7 kills and 3 aces.
