RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In the final match of the season, California Baptist University came out ready to set the tone on its home court. The Lancers got what they were looking for and swept UC San Diego in three sets on identical scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 to close out the season with a bang.
CBU finishes the year with an 8-21 overall mark, while UCSD ends the season at 7-20.
Rohit Paul had a big night for the Lancers, finishing without an error to boast a .647 hitting clip with a match-high 12 kills. Luis Palos capped his collegiate career with a strong effort, finishing with 10 kills on .474 hitting. Enrique de Diego Garcia also chipped in 10 kills on .320 hitting.
Cody Jackson fueled the offense, finishing with 31 assists and four kills. Emmett Enriques and Robert Hadobas shared the libero duties, each posting four digs on the night, while Garcia and Paul led with eight digs each.
As a team, CBU boasted a .400 hitting percentage.
After the Tritons took a 10-9 lead in set one, CBU scored eight-straight points to take command of the set. UCSD gave the ball over with a service error and a combination block from Cody Jackson and Caleb Miller (three blocks) kept it in the Lancers' possession, 11-10.
From there, CBU built momentum as Jackson Burge fired off an ace, followed by a Palos kill. As the Lancers continued to extend their lead, UCSD blew two timeouts, trailing 17-10.
The Tritons managed to cut the margin to five points, 23-18, but Paul tooled the block to put momentum back in CBU's favor. UCSD got the next point, but Jackson sealed the 25-19 set victory with a dump kill, catching the visitors off guard.
UCSD may have gotten the first point in the second set, but CBU quickly jumped back in front. Garcia sparked a 6-0 spurt with a floater kill and then teamed up with Miller to deny a Triton attempt. Palos kept the spurt going with a free ball kill, before Garcia laid down another kill and posted another combo block with Miller.
It forced the Tritons to call an early timeout, but the visitors committed an error out of the break to give CBU a 6-1 cushion.
UCSD battled back to tie the set up at 15-15, but a powerful kill from Palos from the back row kept CBU in front. It sparked six-straight points from the Lancers to give them a 21-15 cushion.
A Triton service error gave CBU set point and an ace from Jackson ended the game, 25-19, to put the Lancers up 2-0 in the match.
CBU looked to grab some separation early in set three to not give UCSD any hope of coming back and extending the match. The Lancers jumped out to an 8-4 lead, forcing a Triton timeout. Once again, however, the visitors came crawling back in it and tied the set 9-9. Jackson showed his great court awareness and dumped the ball into the Triton's front court to keep in front, 10-9.
It was the closest the Lancers would let UCSD get, though, as Garcia put all momentum in CBU's favor with a solo stuff off a free ball attack attempt, 17-13.
There was no stopping the Lancers from there and a Jackson ace put his team at match point, 24-17. The Tritons managed to stay alive briefly, but a trio of seniors –Hadobas with the dig, Jackson with the set and Miller killed it – sealed the 25-19 set three victory to give CBU the three-set win.
