SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- A lead of 25-19 in the second set was as close as the Lancers came to spooking Cal State San Bernardino in the Coyotes' sweep Friday night.
After it dropped the first set of the night by a score of 30-23, the NAIA's No. 3-ranked and 2-time defending champion California Baptist put itself in proper position to close out the second game. The Coyotes, however, ranked No. 3 in the latest NCAA Division II polling, went on an 11-3 run to capture the second set, 30-28.
Cal State San Bernardino carried over the momentum with a, 30-22, victory in the third set to improve to its impressive record to 19-0.
The Lancers lose just their third match of the season to drop to 21-3. CBU's other 2 losses have come to the NAIA's top-2 teams.
Although Verania Willis popped 6 kills in the opening set, the Coyotes were able to neutralize the rest of the Lancer attack, holding CBU to a hitting percentage of just .085 (15-11-47) while they hit .314 (15-4-35) in the 30-23 opening win.
Katie Hatch-Kinser followed up a 2-block effort in the opening set with 3 stuffs in the second, but CBU had built up a 25-19 lead thanks to 4 kills from Willis and 5 more from Shi Fei in the set. Following 3 consecutive points from the Lancers, Hatch-Kinser teamed up with Sara Rice to block Fei and set the Coyotes on the 11-3 game-closing rally.
Playing without Yudelka Bonilla in the third set after she came down with an ankle injury to close out the second game, the Lancers fell behind on a Lisa Dogonyaro kill at 9-8, and found themselves playing from behind throughout the duration of the set.
California Baptist made it interesting at 17-19, on a kill from Willis, but the Coyotes quickly collected themselves and allowed the Lancers just 5 more scores to close out the set.
Caitlin Parker posted a team-high 19 assists while Lauren Briley complimented her with 14 sets of her own.
