LA MIRADA, Calif. --- An easy, 30-19, win in the opening set may have made the NAIA's No. 3-ranked and 2-time defending champions comfortable, but No. 16 Biola was not ready to go down--at least not without a fight.
The Lancers even won the first 7 points of the second set against the Eagles, but Biola came back thanks to a 9-3 rally that knotted the game 2 score at 18-18.
From there, the Eagles (14-10, 7-7), led by Megan Scheenstra's 22 kills, took control of the match. Biola, which posted just one block in the opening set, erupted for 8 blocks following the first game and held the Lancers to hitting percentages of .081, .071 and .026 in the last 3 games.
The, 30-19, 25-30, 29-31, 15-30, defeat was California Baptist's second loss in a row, marking the team's first losing streak since Oct. 2004, as it falls to 22-5, 12-3.
With the game-2 score tied at 23-23, the Lancers handed the Eagles their 24th point on a service error, one of 13 in the match. Biola led at 26-25, but nailed down 4 unanswered points, thanks to a pair of Scheenstra kills, to even the score at a game apiece with the 30-25.
Three-straight unforced hitting errors cost California Baptist the third game, as the Lancers saw their, 29-27, gamepoint advantage slip away. Scheenstra's kill made the game 29-28 in favor of CBU, and the Lancers were unable to find the court on either of their next 3 swings to lose, 29-31.
Biola had built up a, 22-14, lead and again, it was Scheenstra that sparked the Biola offense, with a kill that set her team on a 7-0 run featuring a pair of service aces from Kristen Peterson. Scheenstra ended the match with her match-high 22nd kill.
Verania Willis had 18 kills while Shi Fei hit .367 (14-3-30) in the loss.
