SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Brandie McCann's 3-pointer with 3:47 left sparked a 7-0 run that brought California Baptist to a deficit of just 2, at 57-55, but Westmont secured a 64-55 win with a late 7-for-8 effort at the free-throw line in both teams' Golden State Athletic Conference opener.
The Lancers drop their first game of the year and fall to 4-1, 0-1, while Westmont, which had made only 2 of previous 6 attempts from the charity stripe, improves to 4-1, 1-0.
McCann's only field goal of the night answered a 3-pointer from Stephanie Anderson--who ended the night with 11 points--that capped off an 8-4 rally and put the Warriors up by a score of 54-46.
Following McCann's long-range bucket, Bryana Williams and Nicole Davis would each convert on 2 free throws to bring the Lancers within 57-55 with 2:23 remaining.
Westmont, which has now won 9 in a row at home against the Lancers, doubled its lead with 1:03 left on Ali Mooty's free throws, and Jessica Case sunk 2 pairs of shots from the stripe leading up to Amber Stevens' free throw with 8 tics left to make the final 64-55.
The Lancers were held scoreless in the game's final 2:23, missing 5 attempts from the field and turning the ball over 3 times.
Nicole Davis, who finished with a game-high 20 points, had brought the Lancers within 2 with a pair of free throws at 8:56. Westmont's lead had expanded to 8 points after Alisha Heglund scored with 6:03 left in the half to make the score 52-44.
Davis hit a 3-pointer with just over a minute left in the first half to bring the halftime score to 28-25 in favor of Westmont.
Junior guard Lauren Laurent finished with 11 points and 7 boards for California Baptist, which was whistled for 19 fouls compared to Westmont's 13. The Lancers gave away 23 turnovers while the Warriors committed 20 giveaways of their own.
