COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Erin Greenberg notched a team-high 16 points and did not miss an attempt from the field in her first game of the season, but California Baptist dropped its second game in a row, 98-58, to the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Vanguard.
The Lancers, who had gone undefeated in the preseason, drop to 4-2, 0-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, while Vanguard (third-place finishers at last year's NAIA National Tournament) improves to 5-0, 1-0.
Greenberg's total was complimented by Paris Michel and Bryana Williams, who notched 11 and 10 points, respectively, but no other Lancer reached 5 points for the night while guards Brandie McCann and Nicole Davis were held to 7 points combined on the night.
Meanwhile, Vanguard boasted 11 goalscorers, led by 2006 GSAC Player of the Year Kelly Schmidt, who scored 23 points and was 8-for-11 from the field. She also hauled down 8 boards and dealt out 6 assists while Rachel Besse shot 80 percent and notched 21 points.
The Lions shot 57 percent (20-for-35) in the second half, and 53 percent (37-for-70) for the game and held California Baptist to 32 percent (10-for-31) in the second half and 33 percent (20-for-61) for the game.
In the first half, Vanguard built up a double-digit lead as early as 5:42 into the game, when Melissa Cook scored to make the score 16-5. The Lions, who had 8 scorers in the opening half, including Schmidt's 13, outshot the Lancers 48.6 percent (17-for-35) to 33.3 percent (10-for-30) to build up a 47-27 lead at the break.
