COLUMBIA, Mo. --- While she notched 7 kills and 3 blocks in a pool play sweep of Cedarville (OH), it was Angela Willis' game-2 serving that stood out, as she slammed 5 aces in a 9-0 California Baptist rally to help the Lancers to a win.
With the team ahead, 12-10, in game 2, Willis served 4 consecutive aces ahead of a pair of kills by Verania Willis that made the score 18-10. But Angela Willis was not about to stop at 4 aces in the run, however, as her fifth ace in the rally was backed up with a Lindsey Siefken kill that gave California Baptist a 20-10 advantage.
The win is the second in a row to start the NAIA National Championships, as the 2-time defending champs improve their season record to 30-7. The Lancers recorded 12 service aces altogether, as they cruised to a 30-21, 30-15, 30-16 victory.
Tonight's match with No. 7-seeded Albertson will decide which of the 2 teams will earn an automatic bid to the tournament quarterfinals tomorrow afternoon. The loser will square off with the loser of tonight's Pool A National American-Columiba matchup tomorrow morning. Albertson already has 2 wins under its belt in the tournament, with a 3-1 win over Cedarville and a 3-0 sweep of Lee in yesterday's action.
Verania Willis, who had 11 kills and a pair of blocks, got the Lancers rolling in game one, with 7 kills, as she notched 2 kills in a row to make the score 15-12. Another of her kills gave California Baptist an 18-14 lead, and Cedarville never came within 4 the rest of the way.
Siefken (14 kills, 4 blocks), ended the opening set with a pair of kills as Shi Fei had 6 of her 7 digs in the, 30-21, opener.
Siefken and Fei, along with Verania Willis, posted 4 kills apiece in the second set, while Yudelka Bonilla (9 kills, 6 digs) ripped 3 kills in the set, as the 9-0 run put Cedarville at a 10-point disadvantage.
An ace off the bench from Brittney Barton helped the Lancers out to a 5-0 lead in the closing set, as California Baptist stormed out to a 21-11 lead after one of Siefken's 5 game-3 kills. Deanna Bathauer posted a pair of kills and 2 digs off the bench as the team polished off the sweep with a 30-16 victory.
Caitlin Parker dealt out 44 assists and finished with 3 digs, while Katrina Clark had 9 digs.
