LONG BEACH, Calif. --- The Lancers' attempt to stake a claim against the NCAA's No. 12-ranked Long Beach State fell short Friday night, as the 49ers defended their home court with a 3-game sweep.
The loss breaks a 9-match winning streak for the NAIA's No. 1-ranked and 3-time defending champion California Baptist, which falls to 9-5 on the season. The, 30-27, 30-25, 30-25, win moves the 49ers to 6-5 on the campaign.
Shamsu Awudu, the 2-time reigning NAIA Tournament MVP, knocked 20 kills for the Lancers and hit a match-high .485 (20-3-35), as Donald Baliaba ended with 12 kills but was held to a .029 (12-11-34) clip for the match.
The Lancers hit .462 (15-3-26) in the second set, but committed 16 service errors on the night. They hit a respectable .327 (45-15-92) for the evening, while LBSU posted a .371 (52-16-97) average.
Norm Hutton and Dan Fabry each posted a baker's dozen in the kills category to lead the 49ers.
