SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Donald Baliaba slapped down 19 kills, but the NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist fell in straight sets, 30-25, 30-24, 30-22, to the NCAA's No. 4 UC Santa Barbara Wednesday night.
The Lancers drop their second match in a row to a top-rated NCAA program, after losing in 5 sets to No. 11 Loyola-Chicago Saturday night in Riverside. California Baptist drops to 15-8 on the season.
Baliaba hit .314 (19-8-35) and accumulated 8 digs, and Yukai Sun posted a team-high .389 (11-4-18) hitting clip in the loss, as Theo Brenner notched 11 kills on 14 errorless swings (a .786 percentage) for the Gauchos, who set a new single-season school record, with 175 aces on the season, with 9 one-hit wonders on the evening.
Eric Plunkett finished with 41 assists, while Ralph Asmar finished with 5 blocks.
