PROVO, Utah ? For the second-straight day California Baptist came up short against No. 1 BYU, but this time the Cougars took a 3-0 (30-23, 36-34, 30-23) decision.
The Lancers (2-3) got 19 kills from Donald Baliaba, but it wasn't enough as Cougars (7-0) had 14.5 blocks to shut down the CBU offense. The Lancers hit just .238 (49-24-105) for the match, but much like the day before the Lancers made the second game exciting.
After falling in the opening game, the Lancers trailed in game two 28-23 before ripping off six-straight points to set up game-point at 29-28. BYU answered with back-to-back point taking the advantage at 30-29, before CBU tied the game at 30 and 31 before taking gaining game point again at 32-31. Romain Vetter ripped a kill to give the Lancers a 33-32 lead, but the Cougars answered again scoring a pair of points taking a 34-33 lead. A Yukai Sun kill tied the game at 34, but that was it for CBU as BYU recorded the next two points.
Vetter finished with a team-high five blocks, but was out done by three Cougars as Russell Holmes finished with eight blocks while Jonathan Charette and Andrew Stewart recorded six each. Ivan Perez led the way for BYU with 12 kills.
Eric Plunkett had 45 assists for CBU. Adiel Tiedjop also had 10 kills for the Lancers.
The Lancers now prepare to take on UCLA, Wednesday, when they travel to Westwood, Calif., for a 7 p.m. start.
