IRVINE, Calif. ? It was never a matter of if, but a matter of when Erin Greenberg would become the all-time leader in three-pointers made at CBU. The senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., needed just three treys to pass Demetria Dixon and did just that to notch her 219th career three.
“I really wasn't aware of how close I was until a couple of weeks ago,” said Greenberg. “I'm glad it happened the way it did. I couldn't have thought of a better way to close out the regular season. This is so much better that what I had expected when I first got here. It was a crazy ride and this just tops it off.”
Greenberg scored 17 points in the 80-62 win over Concordia that closes out the regular season for the Lancers (16-11, 10-10). CBU finishes the year with its best conference record since the 1989-90 season and the most wins in a conference season since 1987-88.
“We knew she was going to do it,” said CBU head coach Danelle Bishop. “It was just a matter of time. She missed her first couple of shots and I just told her to keep shooting. Good shooters don't stop shooting the ball and she eventually started to hit.”
Jeanine Deno scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the way for California Baptist. Romeka Randolph notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Brenna Hahn was also in double figures with 10 points while Bryana Williams was two points short of a double-double with eight points and 12 boards.
“This game was just like out last one at home,” said Bishop. “We played really well except for the last five minutes. We gave up quite a bit in the end. Our players are just gelling right now. I was impressed with our overall chemistry. There are always positives out of any situation. Especially when we have had so many injuries, we had to have people step up.”
CBU trailed just a handful of times in the first half, but were never down by more than four. Concordia took its last lead of the contest at 18-16 before a Greenberg jumper sparked a 19-6 run to close out the half. Greenberg got bookends baskets in the run by closing it out with a try to give CBU a 35-24 halftime lead.
The Lancers began to run away with it in the second half after the Eagles cut its deficit to 10 at 38-28. Greenberg sparked another run as CBU scored 11 straight points to take the lead at 49-28. CBU took its biggest lead of the game at 62-37 with nine minutes left on a Deno three.
The Lancers shot 46.6 percent (27-for-58) from the floor and 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from three-point range. CBU was almost perfect from the charity stripe hitting 17 of its 18 attempts. The Lancers also out rebounded the Eagles 49-40.
The Lancers will now travel to Citrus College to take on Azusa Pacific in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament, Wednesday at 7:30.
