RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Blair Penner ripped a school record nine aces in a 3-0 (30-16, 30-23, 30-19) win over Holy Names, Saturday night. Seidu Ajanako had the previous record with eight aces in a 2005 match against Missouri Valley.
Penner served six aces in the first game alone and had 17 assists for the Lancers (9-7). Mike MacNeill and Corey Spence each were in double-figure kills. MacNeill notched 13 while hitting a .800 clip and Spence recorded 12 while hitting a .500 clip. Eric Plunkett had a match-high 12 assists. Rich Parris also had three aces.
MacNeill and Parris led the defense with MacNeill having six digs while Parris had five.
CBU hit a .810 clip (17-0-21) in the opening game and hit .500 (16-2-26) in the final game. The Lancers hit .500 (47-9-76) for the match.
California Baptist had no trouble with Holy Names and trailed just briefly in the second and third games.
CBU opened the match with a 17-4 run including Penner's six aces. In the second game, the Lancers pulled away using a 9-2 run to take a 25-17 lead. CBU took advantage of four Hawk errors and a kill by Spence to take a 2-0 match lead.
In the final game, the Lancers broke a 6-6 tie with a 7-1 run and controlled the rest of the game from there.
California Baptist will now head to Long Beach, Calif., where it will take on two top-notch NCAA Division I team. The Lancers will play No. 1 Penn State, Friday at 5 p.m., and then will take on No. 15 IPFW, Saturday at 5 p.m.
