LA JOLLA, Calif. ? California Baptist posted a season high 19.5 blocks in a 3-1 (22-30, 30-27, 30-26, 30-24) win over UC San Diego in their final regular-season road game
The Lancers (11-11) got behind a season-high eight blocks from Romain Vetter and career-highs for both Blair Penner and Eric Plunkett as each posted seven blocks. With the eighth block, Vetter notched his 318th career block breaking Sergio Rose's (2002-05) school record of 317.
Donald Baliaba led the offense with 21 kills and hit a .410 clip. Adiel Tiedjop also ripped double-figure kills with 15.
Despite faltering in the opening game, hitting just a .054 clip, CBU bounced back in the final three games hitting over .370 in games two and four.
UCSD broke the game one open with a 6-1 run, to break a 6-6 tie, and took a 12-7 lead. The Tritons held the lead form there to take a 1-0 match lead.
The second game featured 14 ties with the final one coming at 26. Blair Penner broke the tie with a kill as the Lancers scored four of the final five points to tie the match at one. CBU took advantage of some late-game errors by the Tritons in game three after UCSD held a 23-22 lead. Three straight errors gave CBU a 25-23 lead, one that the Lancers never relinquished.
The Lancers had no problem in the final game controlling it from start to finish. Baliaba and Tidejop combined for 15 kills in the game as Baliaba had nine and Tiedjop had six. CBU hit .371 (19-6-25) in game four.
Plunkett dished out a match-high 49 assists while Corey Spence had 10 digs.
California Baptist will end the regular season, Friday, when it hosts Hope International for senior night. Plunkett, Spence, Vetter, Yukai Sun and David Mendoza will play their last games in Van Dyne Gym.
