LAIE, Hawaii --- NCAA Division II BYU-Hawaii scored two second half goals and then held on for a 2-1 non-conference win over California Baptist University Monday afternoon in the Lancers opening game of a three-game road trip in Hawaii.
The loss is the Lancers' second straight. After starting the season 3-0, they are now 3-2, having lost both to NCAA DII teams. The Seasiders snap a two-game losing skid and improve to 2-4.
“We didn't show the offensive urgency that we needed in a difficult environment,” said first-year head coach Ryan Jorden. “Hopefully, we will get educated from this one. We just didn't do a good job of taking care of the chances we created. All in all, it was disappointing. My hope is that we can turn around and put it behind us in our next game, and that the guys will have the appetite to get it done.”
After a scoreless first half that saw just five combined shots, Viktor Behzani put BYU-Hawaii on the board on the 63rd minute on a free kick to the top right corner of the net from nearly 30 yards out.
Then, in the 87th minute, Adam Maciejewski caught Lancer keeper Jeff Redigner off his line and buried a shot from nearly 40 yards out for what turned out to be a key insurance goal. The Seasiders scored on their only two shots on frame.
Just one minute later, Gabriel Gonzalez put home his 3rd goal of the season when he slotted home a pass from Martin Medina to the bottom right corner from 10 yards out.
The Lancers never got the equalizer.
Both teams had seven shots, two each on goal.
CBU next plays Chaminade Wednesday (Sept. 17) before concluding its trip Friday against Hawaii Pacific.
