HONOLULU, Hawaii --- With just 16 seconds left in the first overtime, sophomore Tim Wardell came through with the game-winner, lifting California Baptist University to a 1-0 overtime win at NCAA Division II Chaminade Wednesday afternoon.
The win snaps the Lancers' mild two-game losing skid as they improve to 4-2 on the season. The Silverswords fall to 1-5.
“We had some serious conversations the past two days with the guys about what we are trying to do,” said CBU head coach Ryan Jorden. “The guys just flat out stepped up today and responded, and it might have clicked in for them today. They deserved to win, and I'm so pleased with their spirit throughout the game. They had to go the distance to get the win, but they kept persevering and got it done.”
Wardell's shot was the only one in extra time. The Lancers out-shot Chaminade, 21-7, on the day, including a 12-1 advantage in the second half, yet couldn't find the net. Chaminade keeper Kris Lounsbury made four saves before Wardell snuck one past him.
With the second 10-minute overtime period looming, the Lancers began one of their many build-ups they had throughout the game. After a couple of passes, Martin Medina, who entered the game with less than seven minutes left in regulation, played a diagonal ball to Wardell. The sophomore was able to bring the ball down, collect himself and fire it inside the far post for his third goal of the campaign.
“We were in command all day,” said Jorden. “We created a ton of chances and played so many balls into the box. I am pleased with the work rate for the entire 100 minutes.”
Jeff Redinger was rarely tested and needed to make just one save for his second shutout of the season.
The Lancers conclude their stroll through Hawaii Friday when they take on Hawaii Pacific at 6:30 p.m. (PST).
