MALIBU, Calif. ? California Baptist did all it could forcing a five-set match with the 2008 NCAA runners-up, but fell short of knocking off Pepperdine, falling 3-2 (26-30, 30-26, 30-20, 34-36, 15-13) Friday night.
The new kid on the block, Levi Cabral stepped on to campus just this week and was on the bus to Malibu Friday and couldn't have made a grander debut. The freshman out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ripped a school-record 38 kills and also notched a .397 hitting percentage.
“We really didn't know a lot about Levi before this week, but he made an instant impact tonight,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “He's quick and deceptive and sets himself up well to rip the ball. He still needs some time to get into game shape, but he will make this offense stronger.”
From the opening serve Cabral was already changing the makeup of the Lancers. In the first set he went for nine kills as CBU jumped out to a 1-0 match lead. The Lancers never trailed, but saw the Waves come as close as two on several occasions, but CBU answered every time.
Pepperdine went back to business and seemingly were on their way to closing out the match after taking the second and third set and led 27-24 in the third set until CBU got a pair of kills from Adiel Tiedjop and an error from Pepperdine to tie it at 27. The after having seven straight set points, with the final one coming at 34-34 the Lancers finally came out on top to force a fifth and final set.
The Lancers stormed out to a 7-3 lead in the fifth set, but the Waves used a 9-3 run to take a 12-10 lead. CBU answered with kills from Blair Penner and Tiedjop to tie at 12, but Pepperdine retook the lead at 13-12. A Pepperdine error tied it at 13, but back-to-back errors by the Lancers sealed the match.
The Waves now still own a 6-0 advantage over CBU. It was the closest match between the two teams since the 2005 season when Pepperdine won 3-2.
It was a night of career-highs for a few Lancers. Penner dished out 71 assists and had seven digs; both were career highs. Mike MacNeill and Micah Tokuda each posted career-highs in digs as MacNeill notched 13 while Tokuda had eight. Garet Kreutziger also notched a career-high with four blocks.
“Blair was definitely the key tonight,” said McGuyre. “He was able to get the ball to the right guys and had great timing on his passes. Levi and Adiel don't do what they do tonight without Blair.”
Tiedjop was right behind Cabral with 28 kills on the night and hit .346. He also posted a career-high seven digs.
“Adiel really took over for us late,” said McGuyre. “Levi was starting to run out of gas back in the third set, and that's when Adiel stepped us. He pulled us out in the fourth and helped give us a chance in the fifth set.”
