RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It was the last chance for a tune-up for California Baptist University Wednesday night and the Lancers looked to be running smoothly with a 100-46 win over Michigan-Dearborn.
It was the final non-conference game for the Lancers (8-4) before the gauntlet of the Golden State Athletic Conference begins Saturday.
Megan Bradford scored a career-high 21 points and also had four steals. The senior guard went 8-for-13 from the field and 5-for-9 from 3-point range.
Bradford scored 12 of her points in the first half going 4-for-6 from 3-point range in just 11 minutes. She hit two threes early in the first half to put CBU up 8-2 and then capped a 23-7 run with back-to-back treys to put the Lancers up 35-13 with 6:22 left in the half. The Wolves cut the lead to 35-18 with 4:29 left in the first, but the Lancers closed it out with a 16-6 run to take the biggest lead of the half at 51-24.
The Lancers started the second half with a 21-1 run to take a 72-25 lead with 12:47 left in the game. CBU took its biggest lead of the contest with 1:51 left on a Brianna Estell jumper that put the Lancers up 100-44.
The 54-point win was the second largest win of the year for the Lancers and the third 100-point game in Danelle Bishop's tenure at CBU.
Three other Lancers scored in double figures as Heather Couzens scored 16 points and added six rebounds while Brenna Hahn scored 11 and Kendra Morris added 10. Hahn was 5-for-7 from the field and added four steals as well. Monique Calvello was just a point short of a double-double with nine to go with her 11 rebounds.
CBU hit a blistering 53.5 percent (38-71) from the field and were 55.6 percent (10-18) from downtown. The Lancers also were 14-for-18 from the charity stripe. The high percentage from the field was due partly to CBU's ability to get in the paint with half of the points coming in the lane. CBU also scored 49 points off of the Wolves' 35 turnovers. The Lancer defense also held UMD to just 32.7 percent from the field.
The Lancers now take on Fresno Pacific in a rematch in one of the best games of the 2008-09 season. CBU had a come-from-behind victory in overtime against the Sunbirds inside Van Dyne Gym last year. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
