SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ? What began back on Feb. 19, finally came to an end, but it took the 12th-ranked team in NCAA Division I to end the 13-match winning streak for California Baptist University. UC Santa Barbara needed all five sets to upend No. 1 the Lancers (22-6), 3-2 (20-30, 30-27, 26-30, 30-27, 15-13), who had not lost since Feb. 13 when now No. 2 Cal State Northridge defeated CBU, 3-0. The Lancers then picked up their first of 13 straight wins with a 3-1 win over No. 2 Lindenwood.
The streak ties the third largest streak in school history next and stands just behind the 2003 mark of 14 straight and the school record of 17 in a row set in 2004.
Adiel Tiedjop, Levi Cabral and Mike MacNeill combined for 57 of the Lancers' 71 kills as all three were in double figures. Tiedjop led the way with 25 kills while Cabral was close behind with 21. MacNeill had 11. Tiedjop and MacNeill both had over .400 hitting percentages with Tiedjop posting a .415 clip while MacNeill was at .471. Both were also just a dig shy of a double-double with nine and MacNeill also had a match-high three aces.
Tyler Krieger served up a career-high 49 assists, in four sets, after Blair Penner had 14 assists before going down with an ankle injury in the second set. Tiedjop also combined with Garet Kreutziger and Marcus Vinicius with a team-high five blocks.
CBU never trailed in the opening game, hitting .526 (12-2-19). The Lancers led 13-10 before breaking it open with a 13-5 run to take a 26-15 lead. The Gauchos closed it to 26-18 before three service errors and a double-block from Garet Kreutziger and Cabral closed out the set for CBU.
The Lancers led 20-18 in the second set before UCSB used a 4-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. The Lancers tied the game at 22 on a kill and an ace from Tiedjop, but the Gauchos scored back-to-back points to lead 24-22. CBU got no closer than three as UCSB picked up a set to tie the match a 1-1.
CBU didn't trail in the third set either and held its biggest lead of the set at six on six different occasions with the final coming at set point at 29-23. The Gauchos answered with three straight points before a service error put CBU up 2-1 in the match.
UCSB forced a fifth set after winning the fourth and used a 5-1 run to break a 7-7 tie in the fifth to control the match. The Gauchos never trailed from there and gave CBU its first loss in over a month.
