IRVINE, Calif. --- California Baptist University kicked off its 2010 track season running in the Concordia Open Saturday afternoon. The Lancers, who were running in their first track meet since 2002, had several notable finishes.
There were 38 total events, including sprints, distance, relays, jumps and throws, and the Lancers finished first in six different events while only participating in the distance events.
It took the Lancers all of two events to bring home their first top finish as the CBU “A” team won the distance medley in a winning time of 10:27.93, nearly 13 seconds ahead of second place Biola. Then freshman Joshua Verdone picked up the Lancers' first individual victory with a win in the 1,000-meters, running a winning time of 2:42.20. Teammate Kevin Wunderley was second (2:46.29).
Lynnea Sjoerdsma then got into the act on the women's side, winning the 800-meters in a time of 2:24.80, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of Azusa Pacific's Candice Chessum. A trio of Lancer women, paced by Gabi Jimenez (6:01.69), finished 1-2-3 in the mile. Natasha Brown was second, and Hanna Ingulsrud was third.
Mitchell Moore then made a CBU sweep in the mile, winning the men's race in a time of 4:28.56. Javier Madrid was third (4:34.56), and Victor Delgado was fifth (4:39.67).
The Lancers' concluded their successful afternoon winning their final event, the men's 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:12.55, beating second place Biola by nearly eight full seconds.
