RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University waited seven long games to finally showcase its new talents inside the Van Dyne Gymnasium and Saturday night the Lancers certainly put on a show against neighboring La Sierra.
CBU handed the Eagles a 103-56 drubbing in front of its home fans after fighting through nearly a month's worth of early season tournament play on the road.
“It was nice for the girls to finally get to play in front of their friends and family in the gym we practice in every day,” said Head Coach John Marcum. “I thought we did a good job with our shot selection and took care of the basketball. We tried to play fast tonight and that made for an entertaining game.”
The Lancers broke the 100-point mark for the second time this season, something CBU did only once all of last year.
CBU had four players score in double figures, led by Brenna Hahn with 27 and Renetha Burton with 22. V.V. Vasciunaite chipped in 16 points and Chynna Burwell added 12.
Overall CBU shot 48.7 percent from the field and 75 percent from the line.
“Shooting close to 50 percent from the field and 75 percent on our foul shots are two of our goals each game,” said Marcum. “We also out-rebounded them by eight on the game, so that was good to see.”
The Lancers' length was a consistent problem all night for the Eagles. The 6'0” Burton grabbed eight offensive rebounds on the night and the 6'4” Burwell had four boards and two blocks. Even the 5'7” Hahn got in on the action on the glass, leading all players with 10 rebounds. CBU actually had more offensive rebounds than defensive, grabbing 23 of its 44 rebounds on the offensive end.
The game was never really in question from the outset, as CBU sprinted out to an 11 point lead in the first five minutes of play. CBU went on a 14-1 run late in the half to run its advantage to 30 points. The closest the Eagles would get the rest of the night was within 26 points.
Hahn opened the second half with one of her seven 3-pointers on the night and the tone was set from there on out. CBU was 7-for-13 from beyond the arc in the second half.
La Sierra shot just 37.7 percent from the field in the game and 17.6 percent from the 3-point line. The lone bright spot for the visiting Eagles was Ashley Baumgaertel's 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
The Lancers improve to 6-2 on the season with the win.
“I told the girls that the preseason stuff is over now and as we move into conference play it's like a brand new season,” said Marcum. “From here on out it's a race to 15 wins. Fifteen or 16 wins should make the national tournament and that's our goal.”
The Lancers begin GSAC play on the road at Point Loma Nazarene next Tuesday. CBU then will face Biola at home on Saturday. Both games can be heard on KPRO-1570 AM.
