RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University got the first big Golden State Athletic Conference win of the John Marcum era Saturday night, defeating No. 13 Biola 74-63 at home.
V.V. Vasciunaite led the Lancers, taking over late after the team had given up an 18-point advantage.
“I was very thankful to get this win and see the girls respond to adversity the way they did,” said Marcum. “Biola is a good team. They are tough and physical and we matched them tonight.”
CBU grabbed the 18-point lead with 3:34 left in the first half on one of Vasciunaite's three 3-pointers. The Lancers would close the half with a 13-point lead at 38-25.
The Eagles came out and immediately began chipping away at the Lancer lead, pulling within one with 10:48 to play.
Vaciunaite answered the Eagle charge by knocking down a contested jumper and Brenna Hahn hit one of two free throw shots to push the lead back to four for CBU.
Biola would cut the lead in half with a layup on an offensive rebound and then hit three free throw shots to take a 51-50 lead with 7:30 left to play.
It was once again Hahn and Vasciunaite that came to the rescue for the Lancers, as Hahn hit a layup on the very next possession. After Renetha Burton blocked an Eagle shot, Vasciunaite hit another three to get the lead back to four.
The Lancers would outscore Biola 19-12 down the stretch, with Vasciunaite scoring 14 of the team's 19 points in the last seven minutes. The junior from Vilnius, Lithuania scored a season-high 29 points in the contest on 8-of-19 shooting. Vasciunaite hit 10-of-12 foul shots.
“V.V. knows her job on this team and it's to shoot the ball,” said Marcum. “She and Brenna really carried us down the stretch. Brenna kept our team focused and ready and V.V. was aggressive offensively.”
As a team CBU shot 42 percent from the field, and held Biola to just 28 percent shooting. Biola had more second chance points, more points in the paint and got more production out of its bench, but the play of Vasciunaite along with a 20-point performance by Hahn was two much for the Eagles to overcome. Hahn did most of her damage at the free throw line hitting 13-of-16 foul shots.
The Lancers actually attempted 30 less field goals than the Eagles, but CBU held a distinct advantage at the free throw line going 35-for-50 on foul shots.
“After having such a disparity at the free throw line last game and loosing, we knew we needed to get there more often to be successful,” said Marcum.
Both CBU's attempts and makes from the foul line were three away from all-time program records.
CBU moves to 7-3 overall, 1-1 in the GSAC with the win. It is CBU's first win against a top 13 opponent since 2008. Biola falls to 6-2,1-1.
The Lancers continue conference play on the road against Hope International on Tuesday, before Westmont comes to town on Thursday.
