FULLERTON, Calif. --- Brenna Hahn scored a career-high 30 points, but Hope International opened the third overtime with a 14-5 run and then held off a furious charge from California Baptist University, outlasting the Lancers, 100-96, Tuesday night in the Darling Pavilion.
With the loss the Lancers drop to 12-14 overall, 5-11 GSAC, while the Royals improve to 10-16, 5-11, completing the season sweep of the Lancers to clinch the tiebreaker should the two be tied at the end of the season.
Hahn bettered her previous career best of 28 set last Tuesday at Westmont and has averaged 26 points the past four games. Her final two points of the night came on a lay-up with seven seconds left to complete a furious 9-1 Lancer spurt in the final minute to get the Lancers within 97-96, but the Royals held on.
Heather Couzens tallied 25 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. Megan Bradford added 15 points.
Sarah Nylander led the Royals with 26 points. Lauren Salazar added 23.
In a game that had 117 rebounds, 88 free throws, 68 turnovers and 62 fouls that led to 8 players fouling out, it was truly a war of attrition, and the Royals had just enough in their arsenal.
Couzens scored the first two points of the third overtime, but Salazar hit her only 3-pointer of the night for the first of seven straight points to give the Royals for good and then sank a pair from the line to give the Royals a 96-87 advantage with 1:18 to play.
Hahn's lay-up got the Lancers within one with seven ticks left, and the Lancers got a turnover on the ensuing possession. Ambrosia Lagmay, who scored all seven of her points in the final five minutes, got it right back, though, with a steal and then hit two free throws with four seconds left to ice it. The Lancers couldn't get off a final shot.
The teams scored more points in the third overtime (36) than the first two combined (30).
In the second overtime, Couzens scored the first four points to give the Lancers a 75-71 lead before the Royals reeled off five straight to take the lead. Hahn hit a 3-pointer with 1:05 left and then a lay-up with 14 seconds left to give the Lancers a 80-78 lead. Nylander, though, forced the third and final overtime with a lay-up with four seconds left.
In the first overtime, Bradford broke a 69-69 tie with a lay-up with 1:22 left off the Royals' 30th turnover of the night, but Champ Hood scored 34 seconds later to deadlock the score at 71-71. Couzens missed a jumper as time expired.
The Lancers faced their biggest deficit of the night, 35-20, early in the second half but used a 14-2 run over a 4:01 span to get within 37-34 with 14:27 left. The Lancers took their first lead on Hahn's 3-pointer and no lead grew bigger than five points until the third overtime. The teams combined for just two field goals in the final four minutes of regulation, and the Royals had both of them. After Sara Lycans-Roy tied the game at 64-64 with 2:18 to play, Hahn went 1-for-2 at the line just 13 seconds later. Shauna Ricker went 1-for-2 with 1:12 left to tie it at 65-65, and neither team scored again forcing overtime.
