LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite 24 points from standout Brenna Hahn, California Baptist University allowed the NAIA's No. 21-ranked Biola to post a pair of dominating runs en route to an 82-60 Golden State Athletic Conference victory on Saturday night in La Mirada.
The game was played despite power outages affecting most of Biola's campus, but the Eagles did more than enough to light up the scoreboard to pull away from the Lancers on two different occasions.
Biola led by as many as 29 in the second half and had five players score in double figures, led by Jessilyn Conicelli's 18 points and 14 rebounds. Cheslea De Luca pitched in 16 for the Eagles.
CBU allowed 36 points in the paint in the first meeting – a Biola victory on January 23 – and on Saturday night struggled inside as well. Biola finished with a 40-29 rebounding advantage and pulled in 19 offensive rebounds. CBU allowed 24 points in the paint.
This one was close early with CBU taking a 24-22 lead on a 3-pointer by Hahn with 8:55 remaining in the first half before Biola went on a 15-0 run over the next six minutes of game action. Biola took a 41-28 lead into the locker room and CBU shot just 31 percent in the first half.
Hahn opened the second half with a layup before Biola went on a 22-4 run to put this one out of reach and take a 63-34 lead – their largest of the game. CBU was not able to cut the lead under 16 points for the remainder of the game.
Megan Bradford added 16 points, and Heather Couzens had 11 for the Lancers, who got just five points from their bench in 56 combined minutes. Bryana Williams had a team-high eight rebounds in 12 minutes for CBU.
CBU has lost 13 of its past 15 games and wraps up its regular season on Monday night at No. 3 Vanguard and will likely need to pull off the upset to earn a spot in the GSAC Tournament.
The Lancers are tied for eighth with Fresno Pacific in the GSAC with one game remaining. Concordia looms just one game back. A Lancer win gets them in. However, a CBU loss combined with either a win by Concordia over San Diego Christian or a win by Fresno Pacific over The Master's would keep the Lancers out of the postseason. If all three lose Monday, CBU is in.
The top eight teams advance to the GSAC Tournament, which begins Wednesday.
