RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Kendra Morris scored a career-high 32 points, 21 of them in the first half, and California Baptist University unleashed a month's worth of frustration in one night with a 77-58 win over visiting San Diego Christian Tuesday night.
The win snaps the Lancers' seven-game losing skid, its longest since 2005, as they improve to 11-11 overall, 4-8 GSAC. The Hawks fall to 4-17, 1-11.
Despite committing 31 turnovers, the Lancers still found a way to get it done. Most of it was because of their deft shooting touch from the 3-point line where they shot a hefty 55.6 percent, going 10-for-18. They were 7-for-12 in the first half alone when they took control of the game.
“We did some good things tonight at both ends of the floor,” said CBU Head Coach Danelle Bishop. “I'm a little disappointed with the way we ended the game being sloppy, lethargic and careless with the ball, especially when we've focused on improving certain things, but it is nice to get a win and end that streak.”
The Lancers never trailed and used a 21-5 run over a 7:09 span midway through the first half capped by a Rachel McDaniel lay-up to open a 34-14 lead with 4:41 to play. Morris buried back-to-back treys to close the half, the second coming right before the buzzer to give the Lancers a 46-22 halftime advantage.
The lead stayed above 22 points for the better part of the second half and ballooned to as many as 33 on another McDaniel lay-up that gave the Lancers a 74-41 lead with 5:22 to play. The Hawks showed some life at the end, hitting three of their seven treys in the final five minutes to whittle the deficit down to 19, the closest it had been since the 1:54 mark of the first half.
Morris, who came off the bench, was 9-for-15 from the floor and 6-for-8 from beyond the arc in bettering her previous career-high of 28. She was also 8-for-12 at the free throw line and added five steals and three assists. She was 7-for-10 in the first half and 5-for-6 from downtown.
“We started to look for her more and she knocked down her chances,” said Bishop. “She had a phenomenal night offensively and made some things happen defensively as well.”
Brenna Hahn added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Alyson Haley finished with nine points and five rebounds. McDaniel finished with seven points.
“It's good to have Rachel back in the lineup,” said Bishop. “She did some good things tonight, pushing the ball, getting us set up offensively and forcing things on the defensive end as well.”
