LA JOLLA, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University opened the match well, but could not finish, falling on the road to NCAA Division I/II No. 14 UC San Diego 3-1 (25-30, 30-14, 30-28, 30-26).
The Lancers won the first set and then promptly dropped the next three to lose in the final regular season match of the year.
Mohamed Khattab led CBU with 17 kills on the night, and Adiel Tiedjop had 12.
CBU played 13 players in the match as they get ready for next week's NAIA National Invitational Tournament in Davenport, Iowa.
UCSD had three players recording double digit kill totals and hit .306 as a team.
Blair Penner had 28 assists on the night giving him 1,254 for the season. Penner, a junior, needs 903 more assists to become CBU's all-time assist leader.
The Lancers finish the season on a three match losing streak after falling to NCAA DI No. 2 BYU twice and now No. 14 UC San Diego. The Lancers were 7-6 in the last two months of the season. All but two of the six losses were against highly ranked NCAA DI opponents.
On the year, CBU has fared well against NAIA competition going 10-1. They were 9-10 against the NCAA.
