RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The awards just keep on rolling for California Baptist University Men's Volleyball as Blair Penner was named the inaugural AVCA/NAIA Men's National Player of the Year on Tuesday.
As a captain, Penner led the Lancers to their seventh NAIA National Invitational title last week, earning All-Tournament honors. The junior setter recorded 1,423 assists this season, scored on 57 service aces and defensively had 146 digs and 58 blocks.
“Blair was the difference at nationals for us,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “The speed of the pack is determined by the pace of its leaders and the guys followed Blair on his quest for a title. He was our one steady guy this year from start to finish.”
For his career, Penner is second on the CBU career assists list with 3,087, first in career aces with 152, and fourth in sets played with 322. He has the two highest single-season assist totals with 1,524 in 2009 and 1,423 in 2010, and owns the single-season record for aces with 71 in 2009.
Penner is the first ever NAIA Player of the Year named by the AVCA. He and Levi Cabral were each named to the first-ever AVCA/NAIA All-America Team on Monday.
