LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After cruising to an 18-0 start, No. 2 California Baptist University ran in to a wall Saturday night, dropping its first match of the season to No. 9 Biola on the road.
The Eagles (12-4, 5-1) came back after dropping the first set to take a 3-1 victory (20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-16).
It wasn't a pretty night offensively for either team, as the Lancers hit just .129 and the Eagles hit .193. Both teams totaled 51 kills, but CBU had 31 errors as opposed to 23 for Biola.
It was the Eagle's third big win in the past two weeks, as the NAIA's No. 9-ranked team beat then No. 2 Concordia last week and No. 7 Azusa Pacific earlier this week. The Lancers also defeated Azusa Pacific earlier this month.
The Lancers held the edge in total blocks with 12 versus Biola's 5, and service aces 9-2. Those were the only two categories in which CBU held an edge.
Ingrid Carmona led the way for the Lancers ripping 20 kills on the night, but it took 63 attempts for her to get there as the Eagle defense made life miserable for CBU all night. Jelena Dragovic was the only Lancer to hit above .300, recording seven kills with a .312 hitting percentage.
Christine Douglas was the MVP of the match offensively for the home team, rattling off 19 kills on 36 attempts and seven errors (.333). Emily Weingartner led all players with 21 digs on the match.
After the two teams split the first two games, the rubber match became the closest contest of the nights as it would end up being the decisive set for the Eagles.
The Eagles jumped out to a 12-3 lead early in the third, but the Lancers would battle back and get within seven. CBU stole the momentum with a late five point run, closing the gap to a 23-21 Eagle lead. However, a well placed timeout and two kills gave the eagles the victory and in essence the match.
The fourth and final set was all Biola, as the Eagles won 25-16.
The Lancers fall to 18-1 overall and 5-1 in conference. CBU will continue play on the road Tuesday against The Master's.
