RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The night started with a bang, but ended on a completely opposite note as No. 1 Fresno Pacific defeated No. 6 California Baptist University, 3-1 (31-29, 16-25, 25-19, 25-16).
“We came out firing and even though we didn't take the first set, got the second in pretty impressive fashion,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “I was happy with our effort and intensity in those first two games, but we just didn't sustain it.”
After dominating the second game, the Lancers looked poised to possibly end the 56-match winning streak the three-time defending National Champion Sunbirds came into Saturday's match with.
CBU hit a blistering .500 in the second, while holding Fresno Pacific to only a .062 attack percentage. Ingrid Carmona led the way for the Lancers in the first two games, ripping 14 kills on 26 attempts and only three errors, for a .423 hitting percentage.
If not for some missed opportunities, the Lancers could have held a commanding 2-0 lead following the second. CBU was serving on set point three different times in the first, but could not put the Sunbirds away, losing an intense opener 31-29.
Carmona gave the Lancers a 24-23 lead and forced a Fresno Pacific timeout in the first, with an emphatic kill right over the Sunbird block. Out of the timeout, however, a Lancer service error would tie the score at 24-24. Jessica Kalama immediately followed with another CBU kill to again give the home team a chance to take the set, but a Fresno Pacific kill and Lancer attack error quickly gave the advantage to the visitors.
CBU would fight past three more Sunbird set points in the first, before Erica Adachi ended the marathon with an ace to win it for Fresno Pacific. Bree Rauschenbach had an ace that gave CBU its third set point during the back and forth battle, but again a service error prevented the Lancers from capitalizing.
“We know we can compete with them, but their experience showed tonight and they won out,” said McGuyre. “Every match comes down to one or two key points, their veteran players won those points for them tonight.”
It looked like a completely different team on the floor for CBU in the third and fourth sets and the Sunbirds knew how to capitalize, finishing the match with two quick wins.
After hitting .098 in the first two sets, Fresno Pacific hit .207 in the third and .370 in the fourth to close things out. The Lancers looked out of sync in the third hitting .000 with six kills and six errors on 23 attempts. CBU then hit just .138 in the final game.
“Our intensity dropping in the latter parts of a match has been a problem all year and that's something I need to work on with them,” said McGuyre. “We also stopped going to Carmona and that hurt us.”
Carmona finished the match with a double-double, recording 17 kills (.238) and 12 digs. Fourteen of her kills and 10 of her digs came in the first two games, however. She was the only Lancer in double figures in either category. Jelena Dragovic had eight kills with a .389 hitting percentage, and Kalama also had eight kills, but used 25 attempts and committed seven errors in getting there.
Fresno Pacific was led by Martina Gregusova with 19 kills (.191) and Keke Wang with 13 kills (.133). The Lancers did hold the Sunbirds to their lowest hitting percentage of the year, out-hitting the NAIA's top-ranked team .189-.174. The Sunbird's Mariah Mandelbaum led all players with 25 digs.
Suffering its second loss in three matches, CBU falls to 19-2 overall, 6-2 GSAC. Fresno Pacific improves to 16-0, 8-0, holding on to the top spot in the GSAC.
The road doesn't get any easier for the Lancers, who will travel to Irvine on Tuesday to face No. 7 Concordia in another conference matchup.
