RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It was the same story just a night later for California Baptist University facing UC San Diego on Saturday.
A day earlier the Lancers were forced to battle back from an opening set loss to UC Santa Cruz, getting key contributions from their bench in a 3-1 win.
Only the name behind the UC changed Saturday, as the Lancers downed the Tritons 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-18) with the help of breakout performances from several players off the bench.
After the Lancers lost the opening game, CBU found itself trailing 18-17 in the second set. Head Coach Ryan McGuyre inserted Filip Tomicic into the lineup and he wasted no time finding last night's hero off the bench Mohamed Khattab for a kill to even the score.
CBU would outscore the Tritons 7-3 down the stretch to even the match.
“It was about finding the right combination of guys and going with the hot hand,” said McGuyre. “We had another sluggish start, but were still able to get the win.”
The Lancers once again found themselves in tight game in the third set. With the two teams tied at 22-22, UCSD rattled off two straight points to move to set point.
Out of a timeout, Sebastian Steigmeier came up with a kill on a blocking error by UCSD. Then it was the turn of another key Lancer sub to play hero, as Micah Sherman ripped two straight kills to give CBU the advantage 25-24.
The two teams traded points before Steigmeier came up with one of the biggest plays of the night, serving an ace to win the set.
The Lancers would cruise in the fourth game to win the match.
“Sherman and Matthew Walsh had big nights for us off the bench and I want to definitely give them a lot of credit for this win,” said McGuyre. “Sherman had some clutch kills for us in the third game and Walsh gave us some good defense in the final set.”
Sherman led the Lancers with six kills in the third set and recorded eight kills overall on just 10 attempts, without a single error. Walsh had the second most digs for the Lancers with six on the night, four of which came in the final game. Both totals were season highs for the Sherman and Walsh.
Tomicic also set a season high with 26 assists in three sets of work. He helped lead the Lancers to a .286 hitting percentage in the third and a .440 hitting percentage in the fourth.
“It is a good luxury to have, knowing we have players that can come in and give us a lift when we need it,” said McGuyre. “Still it can be a challenge to develop chemistry with too many players coming in and out. We have to find a good balance, and definitely need to work on starting stronger.”
The Lancers move to 6-3 on the season, while UCSD falls to 2-5. CBU has one more home match, facing Princeton Thursday night at 7 p.m., before heading out on road trips to Massachusetts and Hawaii.
