RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- As chants of overrated echoed through the Van Dyne Gym Thursday night, one thing was certain; they were not aimed at top-ranked California Baptist University.
The Lancers handed the NCAA's No. 6-ranked team, UC Santa Barbara, a demoralizing 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-19) loss, dominating each set along the way.
“We had great balance tonight,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre, who picked up his 200th career win as a men's head coach. “Offensively it was a good night and when we served in I thought we played good defense. We only really had one lull at the beginning of game two, but we played through it.”
In his ninth season with the men, McGuyre moves to 200-70. Since taking over the program he has guided the Lancers to five NAIA titles and is the winningest coach in program history.
“It is definitely special to get this win against UCSB,” said McGuyre. “They are a well coached team and are going to make a good postseason run. It really just means I'm old and have been here a while, but I'm honored and pleased.”
CBU moves one step closer to evening the all-time series with the Gauchos, who still hold a 5-4 advantage over the Lancers.
The Lancers made it clear they were on a mission from the start, hitting a scorching .625 in the opening set, en route to 16 kills and a 25-17 win. Joseph Fitzpatrick, Levi Cabral and Sebastien Steigmeier all ripped four kills in the game.
CBU fell behind 7-2 to open the second set, but went on a 9-4 run to even the game at 11-11. The Lancers late rattled off three-straight points, getting a kill and solo block by Steigmeier, to take a 15-13 lead.
After a UCSB timeout, the Gauchos stopped the Lancer run with a kill by Scott Slaughter, but the Lancers responded with four more unanswered points to take control of the set.
CBU jumped out to its own 7-2 lead in the third and never gave the Gauchos any hope of a comeback, closing the victory out in an hour and 15 minutes.
“Our goal this season was to be undefeated at home and we knew before the season started this match could be the one that stopped us,” said McGuyre, as his team moves to 14-0 this season. “The guys came out and played great, though, and now we have Hope International left to finish it off and send our seniors out with a win.”
Cabral and Steigmeier each had 11 kills in the match and Cabral hit a scorching .667, committing just one error on 15 attempts. Fitzpatrick led the team with an .857 hitting percentage on his six kills. Aaron McCalmont also had an exceptional offensive night, posting nine kills and a .692 attack percentage. Cabral and McCalmont led the team with five digs.
Blair Penner orchestrated the Lancer attack, adding to his career leading assist total with 39 on Thursday night.
CBU hit .493 as a team for the match, while the Gauchos hit .188.
The Lancers move to 20-5 on the year and will face Hope International next Thursday at home in their final match of the regular season.
“We just have to keep training hard in order to finish strong,” said McGuyre. “As we head toward nationals that work in the gym is going to be key and we need to have everyone on board.”
