LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Visiting the defending national champion is never an easy task, but No. 18 California Baptist University found success in the small things Saturday, drawing 11 ejections in their 14-3 loss against the University of Southern California.
"We drew 11 6-on-5 situations against the number one team in the country. That is huge," said Head Coach Rick Rowland. "Unfortunately, we did not convert."
In CBU's 11 advantage opportunities, the Lancers were only able to score once, with a goal by Chris Toy late in the first quarter putting the Lancers one behind at 2-1. It was Toy's sixth goal of the season.
After trailing 4-1 after the first eight minutes, CBU was held scoreless until entering the fourth quarter down 12-1.
"Three of the 6-on-5 opportunities we missed, they turned around and scored," Rowland said. "That is three two-goal turnarounds. We score a couple of those, take a couple of theirs off the board and we have a closer ball game."
Scott Gleason and Brent Troutman both found the back of the net in the fourth quarter, notching their ninth and fifth goals on the season, respectively.
Goalkeeper Austen Ramer earned CBU's player of the game recognition, according to Rowland, by recording six saves and six steals.
USC's Peter Kurzeka led all scoring with six goals.
With the loss, the Lancers fall to 3-2. They will have a week preparation before next Saturday's (Sept. 17) double-header at Claremont. CBU will face Pomona-Pitzer and No. 15 Navy.
