LONG BEACH, Calif. --- California Baptist University suffered another difficult loss on the road Wednesday night as the Lancers continue the toughest schedule in program history.
CBU fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-10) to No. 11 Long Beach State, facing the fourth ranked team in five games so far this season. The Lancers fall to 1-4 with the loss, while the 49ers improve to 3-4 overall.
The Lancers managed just a .095 hitting percentage, while LBSU hit a scorching .429 in the match, totaling 38 kills on 70 attempts.
"This was a tough match, but a great opportunity for us to learn from our mistakes," said Interim Head Coach Allan Vince. "We need to be a much more refined, razor sharp team, especially with another tough match against Cal State Northridge coming up on Friday."
CBU stays on the road to take on No. 9 CSUN Friday night.
The 49ers used early leads in each set to take control and keep the Lancers playing from behind nearly all night. CBU didn't hold a lead later than three points into a game all match.
The Lancers did manage to make the second game the most competitive of the night. CBU weathered an early seven point run by the home team and came back with a 5-1 run to pull to within three points.
The 49er fire power was too much, however, and a subsequent string of five straight points for LBSU gave the team a 17-9 advantage. CBU wouldn't get any closer than six points the rest of the way.
Joseph Fitzpatrick, Jonathan Tuttle and Aaron McCalmont all had six kills to lead the Lancers. Fitzpatrick also posted a team-high .455 hitting percentage.
LBSU's Jim Baughman led all players with 12 kills and also posted a .647 hitting percentage with just one error on his 17 attempts. Connor Olbright had 22 assists for the 49ers.
After traveling to Northridge, CBU has just one home match scheduled before spending the entire month of February on the road. The Lancers face Princeton Monday at 7 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym.
Six of the Lancers road matches in February are against teams currently ranked in the Top 10, including a pair of matches at No. 1 BYU.
