The Lancers tried to dig their way out of a 2-0 whole, but couldn't find their rhythm, finishing the road trip 2-2.
The Lancers fell behind early and at one point trailed 16-5 in the opening set. Behind the service of Jordyn Siko CBU rallied, pulling within three, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
There were a combined 16 errors in the opening set, 10 by the Lancers.
CBU again fell behind in the second game and the same story played out. A late rally evened the game at 20-20, but two kills by Sanoe Recca claimed the set for HPU. Recca led the Sea Warriors with five kills in the set.
The third time was the charm for the Lancers.
Trailing 18-12, six straight points behind the service of Ingrid Carmona evened the game. Two HPU errors and a Carmona kill would help the Lancers take the lead and keep it. Faith Steinwedell ended the set with a kill over the top of the HPU block.
As was the story all night CBU couldn't complete the comeback falling 25-19 in the final set. An early four-point lead was all the Sea Warriors needed, leading the final game wire-to-wire. CBU got within two points late, but never came any closer. HPU finished on a four-point run.
Carmona posted a double-double for the Lancers, tallying 14 kills and 13 digs. Megan Glennie led all players with 16 digs.
The loss drops the Lancers to 15-4 overall, 8-2 PacWest. HPU moves to 9-7, 3-5.
CBU heads back to the mainland, facing Concordia on the road Thursday.
