CBU pushed the home team all game, but wasn't able get the basket it needed in the final minutes.
"I'm proud of the way our team competed tonight," said CBU Head Coach Jarrod Olson. "We fell behind in the second half, but kept fighting and chipping away to stay in the game. We made it tough for a good team to beat us."
After the two teams played even through the first 20 minutes of play, the Thunderwolves took a 14 point lead mid-way through the second half, capping a 12-0 run with a three from Taylor Fox.
The Lancers would slowly whittle that lead away, eventually pulling to within four, 57-53, after five consecutive points from Simone Holmes. That was as close as the Lancers would get.
Brittney Lewis drained a three to draw CBU to within five at the 1:01 mark, but the Lancers were unable to hit another field goal down the stretch. The Thunderwolves made four foul shots in the final 60 seconds.
Erica Hicks led CSU-Pueblo with 15 points and Laurel Kearsley posted a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds.
Holmes led the Lancers offensively, scoring 17 points in 29 minutes off the bench. Lewis scored 11 for CBU. Jasmine Beverly posted another big game on the boards for the Lancers, grabbing 15 rebounds.
"I thought Jasmine had another great game for us and Simone really broke out and had her best game so far this year," said Olson. "We definitely saw some things we need to work on going forward. We've just got to keep working on improving and come out tomorrow ready to play."
The Lancers fall to 2-1 with the loss, while CSU-Pueblo moves to 1-0. CBU will take on Western State tomorrow in its second and final game at the classic.
