PROVO, Utah --- With just one day of rest California Baptist University took on No. 3 BYU for the second time this week, as the Lancers lost in four sets.
CBU fell (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, and 28-26), and this was the seventh nationally-ranked NCAA Division I team the Lancers have faced this season.
Michael Cate led the Lancers in kills with 12, although just hitting .222 on the match. Kristopher Johnson was the only player above .300, as he hit .500.
Robb Stowell hit .343 and led the Cougars with 16 kills on 35 attempts.
In the opening set, the Lancers only managed a hitting percentage of .185 with 11 kills on 27 attempts, while the Cougars hit .217. The Lancers took a 5-1 lead in the very beginning, but both teams traded points for most of the match. A four point rally by the Lancers late in the opening set gave them the victory in the first.
The largest lead of the first game was four.
The Cougars would come out strong in the second game and would only allow the Lancers to have the lead at 12-11. The Cougars took the lead back at 13-12 and would hold onto it for the rest of the set. The Cougars finished the set hitting .409 their best in the match, while the Lancers hit .174.
The momentum carried on for the Cougars in the third and fourth sets. Although the Cougars would take both sets, the Lancers never gave up hope and would climb back just within reach, but couldn't overcome the firepower BYU had to offer.
The Cougars out-blocked the Lancers 16-8 and tallied more assists 50-46. The Lancers finished the match hitting .169 to the Cougars .298.
CBU will face Interim Head Coach Allan Vince's alma mater next week, as the Lancers take on UCLA Feb. 24 at 7 pm.
The Lancers move to 3-12 on the season.
