
Tritons Take Five

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- California Baptist University ended its season facing No. 12 UC San Diego in a tough five set match.
The Tritons beat the Lancers (20-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 15-5). It was the 14th NCAA Division I ranked opponent the Lancers have faced this season.
"This was definitely a tough way to end the season," said Interim Head Coach Allan Vince. "We played a lot of good competition this year and I was extremely proud of how the guys handled it and played. We have nothing to hang our heads about and this was a great group of guys."
Garet Kreutziger led the Lancers with seven kills on 14 attempts hitting .500. Kreutziger also tallied five digs and one block. Jonathan Tuttle hit .346 off 13 kills on 26 attempts.
In the opening set, the Lancers hit .280 with 11 kills on 25 attempts, while the Tritons hit a game low .125 with 13 kills on 32 attempts. The Lancers led by as much as six points and finished the set after a block by Kreutziger and a service error by the Tritons.
The score was tied seven times and changed hands three times.
The Tritons took the momentum back from the Lancers in the second set hitting .375, while holding the Lancers to a .179 hitting percentage. The Lancers jumped off to a 3-0 lead, but were unable to hold the Tritons off as they led by as much as 10.
The Tritons maintained the momentum in the third set, but the Lancers would not give up taking their first lead at 20-19. It wasn't until Tuttle had two big blocks and then landed a service ace to push the lead to 22-19. The Lancers held onto their lead and took the third set off an Aaron McCalmont kill.
The Tritons hit a booming .481 in the fourth set and a blazing .923 in the fifth set. The Tritons rifled off four straight points in the fifth and recorded 12 kills on 13 attempts to take the match.
The Lancers managed to out-dig the Tritons 41-39, but the Tritons tallied more assists 57-45 and blocks 10.5-9.
The Lancers finish the season at 12-16.
