Wednesday night the 14th-ranked Lancers scored a thrilling five set victory over No. 1 UC Irvine in the program's first ever conference match. Thursday night the Lancers were treated to the same fate as the Anteaters, falling in five sets (19-25, 25-17, 17-25, 25-16, 15-12) to No. 13 UC San Diego.
With 12 of the 14 teams in the MPSF ranked in the AVCA/NCAA Top 15 Coaches' Poll, such is life for the Lancers this season.
CBU took the opening set in convincing fashion, but handed it right back to the Tritons in the same manner in the second game.
The Lancers would go up 2-1 with another strong win in the third, but after that the comeback was on for UCSD. After dominating the fourth set, the Tritons pulled out a nail-biter of a fifth set for the win at home.
The teams played the fifth game close until Carl Eberts ripped two straight kills to break a 10-10 tie. CBU managed just two points after that as UCSD got the 15-13 win.
The two teams were nearly equal in almost every statistical category except for UCSD posting five more kills and three more service aces.
CBU again had three players in double figures and were led by Levi Cabral with 17 kills. Aaron McCalmont had 16 kills and a team high 10 digs.
Eberts led all players with 22 kills.
CBU falls to 3-2 overall, 1-1 MPSF, while UCSD improves to 3-3, 2-1.
